Itinerary

The Historic Lanzhou

Lanzhou is divided into the northern and southern region by The Yellow River, which runs through the city. Also known as “The Mother River”, it is a source of rich fertile soil and irrigation water for the people of Lanzhou.

The First Bridge of The Yellow River

Stand at the southern bank of The Yellow River, and enjoy the breathtaking panoramic view of Zhongshan Bridge and the pretty architectures around it. Zhongshan Bridge, “The First Bridge of The Yellow River”, built on 19 August 1909, was formerly known as “The First Bridge”, or “The Yellow River Iron Bridge”. It was renamed in 1928 to commemorate Mr Sun Yat-Sen. The bridge was originally in a shade of orange-red, but was repainted to lead gray to avoid bombings from the Japanese army. The colour of the bridge was preserved since the victory of Second World War. It measures 234 metres long and 7.5 metres wide with four piers and five bridge openings, as well as five spectacular arched steel-structured girders on top. The bridge is always crowded with park-goers in the day and filled with office workers and tourists admiring rows of beautiful lanterns at night.

White Pagoda Mountain

Situated right across the bridge is the White Pagoda Mountain. It was named after the White Pagoda built in the Yuan Dynasty that sits atop the mountain. Ancient architectures were built around it and divided into three levels, with symmetrical stone steps, stone walls, pavilions and corridors. These unique features reflect the integration of nomadic architectural style and traditional Chinese structures.

The Gateway to Xinjiang

As the Western gateway to the ancient Silk Road, Lanzhou remained as a natual point for tourists to enter the Xinjiang province. Travel west and be greeted by the splendour of the biggest lake in China - Qinghai Lake. Visit in July and August to see Canola fields in full bloom on the shores of the Lake and watch cattles and sheeps laze around in the forages of the flowers. You’ll also want to experience the city of Zhangye, reputedly known as “frontier Jiangnan”, home to a number of historical places such as Great Buddha Temple, Zhengyuan Tower and the site of Black Water State and Tombs of Han Dynasty.

Next, you’ll visit Jiayuguan City, which features Jiayu Pass, the largest and most intact part of the Great Wall of China. Jiayuguan is located at the narrowest point of the West and it is also the most important route of the ancient Silk Road’s trading hub. As you pass through the city, you will arrive at the Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes or the Thousand Buddha Grottoes. This famous Unesco Heritage site is known as one of the greatest treasure house of Buddhist art in the world.

After the Mogao Grottoes, be enthralled by the beauty of Mingsha Crescent Moon Spring. Seen from afar, the spring takes the shape of a crescent. As strong breezes blow tiny particles of sand against the dunes, they form a sound akin to that of beating drums, hence its name of Mingsha.

With its pretty glaciers, untouched forests and ethnic tribes, visitors can expect a magical journey through Lanzhou’s natural wonders while enjoying the cosmopolitan cities.

Itinerary

Guiyang, the capital city of Guizhou Province, is surrounded by mountains and offers a picturesque view of Guizhou. It boasts a diverse geographical landscape and ever-changing silhouettes.

Mount Fanjing

Mount Fanjing is known as the  most famous mountain of Guizhou Province. It stretches across a few counties and is the highest of the Wuling Mountain Range. Although its highest peak is only 2500 meters above sea level, visitors can feast their eyes on a scenic view of its cliffs. It also features rock formations, which are named after its shape – Mushroom Stone, Rolls of Books, Eagle Rock and Prince Stone. These unique formations were caused by rock sedimentation and compression..

Huangguoshu Waterfall

Considered as one of the largest waterfalls in China, Guizhou’s Huangguoshu Waterfall should not be missed. From a distance, the waterfall cascades silently, but as you move in closer, the sound builds up to a thunderous roar. As you approach its magnificence, you will be welcomed by three shoals followed by the Rhinoceros Pool. Behind the waterfall curtain, there is a 100-metre long cave with six openings that gives you a majestic view of the environment.

Seven Small Arches Water Town

Seven Small Arches is a famous tourist attraction of Libo county, located at the south of Guizhou. Famously known as “The Emeralds of The Earth’s Belt”, it is one of the Natural World Heritage sites with a small seven-arched bridge spanning across the river. As you cross the bridge, you’ll witness the beauty of Laya Waterfall and a 68-step waterfall. After marvelling at the beauty of these two waterfalls, you can take a scooter ride to the nearby pristine forest for a leisurely walk while admiring the lush trees and shrubs growing along the valley.

Ethnic Villages

Guizhou is also one of the provinces with the largest number of ethnic minorities. The “One Thousand Household Miao Village” is believed to be the world’s largest settlement of ethnic Miao people. Dong Village features the famous Wind and Rain Bridge, where the bridge, tower and pavilion were all built with wood. The deck of the bridge, railings, benches, and roof come together to form a long walkway. The tower and the pavilion were both built on stone piers and adorned with layers of gabled roofs and calabash roof finials.

Buyi tribe’s Stone Village’s houses are entirely made of stone, including the four walls, roof and all tools used in the house. Buyi tribe likes to build their villages on the hillside, where  streams flow by further downhill. During spring, when Canola flowers are in full blossom, you can enjoy a magnificent display of pretty gray houses floating among a sea of golden yellow.

Ancient Town of Qingyan

Qingyan is an ancient town located close to Guiyang. Built on a hill, its original stone walls still remain and stretches across the town. Even the buildings still reflect most of the architectural style of Ming and Qing dynasty, such as the carvings on the structural beams and gabled roofs. As you roam around the town, you might chance upon former residences of famous people from the past, including the Qing Dynasty poet, Zhou Yuhuang who participated in the editing of Kangxi Dictionary; Qing Dynasty Scholar, Zhao Yijiong; Zhou Enlai’s father, Zhou Maochen and many more. This town is also home to many old temples and churches.

Itinerary

Sunny City on a Snowy Plateau

Lhasa, also known as Nikko City, is the Holy Land of Tibetan Buddhism. Tibet is in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau – a vast land covered in snow. It is also a place where mysterious Tibetan customs and culture flourish. With its rich culture and beautiful landscape, many aspire to visit this paradise.

Tianlu’s Qinghai - Tibet Railway

Commencing operations in 2006, Qinghai-Tibet Railway runs from Xining to Lhasa, covering 1956 kilometres. It is the highest high-elevation railway construction in the world. With the launch of the railway services, Lhasa rose quickly to become a developed city with its own array of dazzling shopping malls, hotels and banks.

The Heart of the Holy Land - the Potala Palace

The Potala Palace was built by King Songtsen Gampo when he married Princess Wencheng. The Palace is divided into the White Palace and Red Palace, and boasts a total of 999 halls. The White Palace is a seven-storey tower, which got its name from its alabaster white walls. Every year, major religious activities are held in the largest “Cuo Qin Xia” hall, the place of worship for Tibetan Buddhists and monks alike. The Red Palace, on the other hand, is mainly devoted to religious studies and the Dalai Lama. Lavishly coated with gold and studded with more than 10,000 precious stones, the stupa of the Fifth Dalai Lama is the most luxurious stupa ever built.

Pilgrims' Final Journey - Jokhang Temple

With thousands of years of history, the Jokhang Temple is the most significant temple in Lhasa and the final destination for a pilgrim’s journey. It is said that Songtsen Gampo built Jokhang as a sacred temple to house a statue of eight-year-old Buddha, and many others from Princess Bhrikuti when she came to Lhasa. When Princess Jincheng of Tang Dynasty went to Tibet, she brought a statue of twelve-year-old Buddha to Jokhang Temple, while the eight-year-old Buddha statue and the rest were moved to Ramoche Temple. It is believed that bowing to this Buddha statue is seen as bowing to Buddha himself.

Holy Road - the bustling Barkhor Street

Barkhor Street, also known as "Octagonal Street", is an ancient street surrounding Jokhang Temple. It is a shopping street full of original Tibetan cultural items. The streets are lined up with shops that sell mostly Tibetan food, costumes, handicrafts, ‘Thangka’ (Tibetan scroll paintings), precious Tibet stones and many more. Walk along this street and feast your eyes on the colourful Tibetan culture.

Holy Lake - Yamdrok Yumtso

Manasarovar, Namco and Yamdrok Yumtso are the three scared lakes in Tibet. Yamdrok Yumtso means "Swan Lake"; it is more than 4,400 metres above sea level with a total area of 638 square kilometres. It is also the largest inland lake in the northern foot of the Himalayas and is one of the world's highest freshwater lakes.

Shigatse - Tashi Lhunpo Monastery

Tashi Lhunpo Monastery is the largest temple in Shigatse. Together with Ganden Monastery, Sera Monastery, Drepung Monastery, they are collectively known as the Gelugpa Four Monasteries. The most magnificent structures in the temple are the Maitreya Chapel and the ancient Panchen Lama’s Palace. The Maitreya Chapel is dedicated to a gigantic statue of Maitreya Buddha made from copper and brass, erected in 1914 by the Ninth Panchen Lama. The interior of the temples is adorned with intricate and colourful mural wall paintings.

Itinerary

Poetic Landscape, Beautiful People

Once known as Chang’an, Xi’an was the capital of 13 ancient imperial dynasties. It was once the world’s most prosperous and developed metropolis, famous for its monuments and histories.

The Symbol of the Ancient Capital Xi’an

The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, also known as the Great Ci’en Temple tower, is located at the southern city of Xi'an’s Great Ci’en Temple. Master Xuan Zang (of “The Journey to The West”), returned from his journey and served as the first abbot of the Pagoda. In order to house the statues, scriptures and relics, which he brought back from India to China, Master Xuan Zang personally supervised the construction of the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda. Today, standing at 64.5 metres and seven stories tall, the tower and the Hall of Xuanzang Sanzang were each dedicated to the sacred treasures of the tower, namely the Buddhist relics and the parietal bone of Master Xuan Zang.

One of the Eight Wonders of The World

Legend has it that Emperor Qin Shi Huang constructed the Terracotta Army before he died as his personal afterlife guards and army, to accompany him to his tomb so that he could continue to conquer the world after his death. The Terracotta Army consists of actual life-sized clay figurines of soldiers, horses and chariots. More than 6,000 statues have been uncovered from Pit 1, the largest section of the massive underground military museum. In 1987, Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum and Terracotta Warriors were included in the World Heritage List by UNESCO, and were subsequently known as one of the "Eight Wonders of the World".

The Many Facets of Lintong

Lintong is the East Gate of the Ancient Capital of Xi'an, which is located at about 30 kilometers from the city center of Xi'an. Lintong was the heart of many famous historical events and people, such as “Helen of Troy of China”, “Feast at Hong Gate”, Emperor Qin Shi Huang’s Underground Mausoleum, Emperor Tang Xuan Zong and his beloved Consort Yang Guifei. Today, Lintong is still a major city for China’s political, economic and cultural activities. The Xi’an Incident of December 1936, an important turning point in Chinese modern history, where Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek’s was arrested, also took place in Lintong.

The Most Romantic Hot Spring in History

Each side of the entrance to Huaqing Hot Springs has a beautiful cedar tree welcoming visitors. Upon your arrival, you’ll be greeted by two symmetrical ponds facing each other at the front, and at the back of the Hot Spring, lies a hot bath. If you walk past the bath through the Dragon Wall, you’ll reach the Nine Dragon Lake. At the East of the Lake lies Yichun Hall, to the North of the Lake lies the main Feishuang Hall.  Shenxiang Hall and Yichun Hall are both facing each other East-West, while the West of the Lake is a long winding corridor. If visitors walk from the North to South of the Hot Springs, they can visit the “Gui Fei Pool” and the other “Royalty” Pools, such as the “Lotus Pool” dedicated to Emperor Tang Taizong; “Begonia Pool”, otherwise known as “Gui Fei Pool”, which is used by Consort Yang as well as “Prince Pool”, which is used by the Princes, among others.

A Stunning Waterfall from Heaven

Hukou Waterfall is the world's largest yellow waterfall. Standing at a height of 50 metres, the 500-metre wide waterfall displays its water as if it’s pouring out from the nozzle of a teapot. And this is how the waterfall got its name, “Hukou” which means Mouth of Teapot. Its surrounding scenery changes according to season: during winter, the river becomes frozen; in spring, the torrents cascade down with a thundering roar; and in summer, the water plummets into a whooshing vortex.

Itinerary

A Captivating Ancient City

Changsha, the ancient city of Chu and Han Dynasty, is as charming as Mount Yuelu, and as mysterious as Zhangjiajie. As described by the famous Chinese poet, Tao Yuan Ming, visitors of this historical ancient city can bask in its glorious splendour.

The Peak of Mount Hengshan

Hengshan is one of the Five Sacred Mountains of China, the tallest peak of Hengshan is Zhurong Peak, which stands at a height of 1,300 metres. The Peak is an ideal location to catch the beautiful sunrise, or spend a romantic evening stargazing with loved ones. With the proud Mt Hengshan in the background and temples enshrouded in the clouds, visitors will be treated to a spectacular view of the mountainous landscape.

Landscape of the Majestic Zhangjiajie

In the past, one needs to take many flights of escalators up to Zhangjiajie. But now, cable cars are installed for convenience and for visitors to take in the beautiful scenery at a leisurely pace. The mountain range in Zhangjiajie is mostly comprised of stand-alone peaks with Tian Men Peak being the tallest mountain at a height of approximately 1,500 metres. The other must-see highlights of Zhangjiajie includes the stunning Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon, the terrifying 400-metre long glass bridge, as well as “The Wonder of the World’s Caves” known as the Yellow Dragon Cavern.

Historical Phoenix Ancient Town

Walking down the streets of Phoenix Ancient Town will transport visitors back to the olden days of China. Some of the more popular attractions in Phoenix Ancient Town include the former residence of Mr Shen Congwen, Phoenix Hong Bridge, Tuojiang Ancient Street, Wenchang Pavilion Primary School and Wanming Stone Pagoda. Not far from Wanming Bridge is an old building, which houses collections of paintings of the Phoenix landscape by Huang Yongyu.

Pristine Untouched Landscape of Yongshun Old City

One of the attractions of the Yongshun Old City is the ruins of the 800-year-old Tusi Kingdom, which is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2015. It is the cultural heritage of the chieftain system. Originally a large settlement of Tusi, what’s left now are just remnants of the once magnificent kingdom that stood through time, and the fragments include a temple, an ancestral hall and a few old buildings.  The pristine landscape near the site is just as impressive. With a centuries-old bamboo forest and traditional houses built along the hillside, visitors will be wowed by the view.

Red Stone Forest and Peach Garden

Dubbed as “Wu Ling’s First Wonder”, Red Stone Forest National Geopark dates back to the Ordovician Period, which is almost 500 million years ago. Popular for its oddly-shaped red carbonate rock stones that change colour depending on the weather, it is the only forest of its kind in China. It even won the title of the most beautiful national geological park in 2013. Apart from this award-winning park, Changde Taoyuan County’s Peach Garden is also worth a visit. The county features some famous attractions such as Yuan Ming Temple, Tao Yuan Ming monument, Chrysanthemum Garden, Fangzhu Pavillion and many other scenic spots.

Every March 21st of the Lunar Calendar, the monastery holds a spring festival ceremony and a tournament. During this time, Mongolians come together to compete in horse racing, archery and wrestling.

Built within tall castle walls, to guard against foreign invasion, the Meidai Monastery features various castles, temples and residences. It is home to the descendants of Altan Khan of the Tümed and the Empress Dowager’s Temple. Its main hall, on the other hand, is elaborately decorated with exquisite frescoes.

The Capital City Hohhot

Hohhot, the capital of Inner Mongolia, is the region’s political and cultural centre. As one of the birthplaces of Chinese civilisation, it has a long history of nomadic and farming culture.

One of the city’s most important historical sites is the Zhaojun Tomb. It is located by the Da Hi River, 9 kilometres south of Hohhot, with a large man-made earthen mound that is 33 metres tall and surrounded by beautiful greenery.

There is also the White Pagoda, which is located at the southwestern part of White Pagoda Village, in the eastern outskirts of the city. It was built during Liao Dynasty to preserve Buddhist scriptures. A white-washed building made of brick and wood, the Pagoda is an octagonal building of seven floors, with an architectural style of the Liao Dynasty.

Chifeng Hongshan Culture

The history of Hongshan Culture dates back to the discovery of Red Mountain in Chifeng City. When the biggest jade dragons were unearthed in 1971, the city received its nickname, “Hometown of Chinese Dragons”. Here, visitors will be introduced to the city’s ancient jade and stone carving history.

Moreover, it is also well known for Horqin Grassland, one of China’s greatest grasslands and the birthplace of Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang. In Mongolian, Horqin means “the most loyal tribe”.

Another sight to behold is the Daqinggou (Daqing Gorge) National Nature Reserve. It is a well-preserved remnant of the desert’s ancient forest. Deep within its woods are streams running through its beautiful gorge.

Hulunbuir Prairie

With serene lakes, rolling hills, pristine grasslands and scenic forests, Hulunbuir Prairie is a picturesque paradise where visitors can experience the life of a Mongolian. Visitors can ride horses, train like a soldier, practice archery and crowd around a bonfire to witness a wild wrestling match.

As a city that lies at the border of China, Mongolia and Russia, Manzhouli is a strategic port of entry for trade in Hulunbuir Prairie. In Mongolian, its name means “exuberant/luxuriant spring water". Highlights of Manzhouli include the Chinese border crossing gate and the China-Russia trade area.
