Playtime is an important part of child development. Growing up, kids build skills naturally through play. It’s an activity that gives them endless opportunities to tap into their imaginative power. For adults, playtime provides fun, bonding, and taking a break from everyday responsibilities.

Whether you are cracking your brains on a lovely present for your little ones, or indulging in a hobby that makes your inner child smile–here are six toy stores in Singapore that we believe you should visit.

1. The Better Toy Store (Jewel)

The Better Toy Store is a toy store with a mission: to provide toys that inspire children to learn more about the world around them. It also ensures that all toys being sold are environmentally-friendly.

Many of its wooden toys are made from rubber trees, which have had exhausted their latex and planted in areas with a long history of sustainable forestry.

By turning them into toys, these rubber trees get to “live forever” rather than burning down to release more carbon dioxide into the air.

If you are looking for a toy with meaning and values, The Better Toy Store is probably the best choice.

2. Little Shop (Marina Square)

The Little Shop was founded by a couple who believe hands-on experience and high-quality toys promote experiential learning–both beneficial for a child’s developing growth.

They began importing an exceptional range of toys from Europe that match with their philosophy. Some of them include brick-building sets, child-friendly tools and screws, and toy kitchenettes that offer an open-ended play experience for children.

At the Little Shop, children are encouraged to play and interact with the demo sets before parents decide whether to make a purchase. On top of toys, the toy store also carries puzzles, books, flash cards, and experiment kits to cater to children of different ages.

3. Das Erzgebirge-Haus (Paragon)

There’s something pure and magical about old-school toys made entirely from wood. Das Erzgebirge-Haus has a wide range of exquisite wood crafts, miniatures, and figurines that will fascinate anyone and everyone for hours.

Many of the toys and collectibles sold at Das Erzgebirge-Haus were imported from the US and specifically from the Erzgebirge region in Germany. They are mostly hand-made by veteran craftsmen, with designs that are often one-of-a-kind.

Some of these toys even tell a bit of real-world history–some represent European rail stations or buildings destroyed during the First or the Second World War. Others are more culturally notable: nutcrackers, dollhouses, miniature furniture, musical boxes, and ceramic models of European towns and houses.

In short, Das Erzgebirge-Haus is a toy store that takes the idea of play to a new level by integrating history and culture into toys. This shop is a must-go for those who are after traditional yet exclusive stuff. Some of the toys are also made available via their online store

Fat Toys Corner carries a great range of action figurines, model kits, and collectables imported from various parts of the world. From Transformers, Marvels, to Ultraman, Gundam, Kamen Rider (or Masked Rider, a Japanese superhero TV series), and Super Sentai (Japanese Power Rangers equivalent).

It started as a little toy store on level two of China Square Central in 2011 before moving to its current location in Fook Hai Building early last year.

Even if you are not a superhero fan, the amount of toys that are neatly arranged and displayed on its store front, will surely catch your attention as you walk past. Fans and loyal customers call this place a “haven”. They can easily hunt for limited or vintage edition toys that are hard to find or nearly non-existence elsewhere here, all at an affordable price.
