Brussels Airport Digital Green Lane (DGL) is a standardised pick-up and delivery process between freight forwarders and ground handling agents. Cargo is picked up or dropped off at a registered time slot, and all freight information is shared digitally throughout the process. The DGL initiative was developed and rolled out in collaboration between the Brussels Airport cargo community, Air Cargo Belgium and Nallian. It was delivered through the Truck Visit Management app of which consists of three different modules: digital front desk, slot management, and shipment data sharing supported by a Digital Green Lane dashboard providing the community operational insights and analytics.
As of June 2023, Brussels Airport achieved an adoption rate of 75% of its freight volume processed under DGL. Their goal is to reach an 85% user adoption rate next, and to move to a fully digital green lane process for all tasks relating to the cargo pick-up and delivery process, through the implementation of digital driver registration and digital handover solution.
"When DGL went live, Skyfast could already eliminate a lot of waiting time at the ground handlers’ facilities. We have been able to deploy our staff more efficiently than before." – Jeff Segers, Managing Director Skyfast Belgium.
"We know in advance what to expect so we can shift with our manpower if needed. We don’t get any complaints any more about queuing, which used to give a lot of issues. It’s also more relaxed for our staff because activity is more spread out." – Johan Rosiers, Customer Service and Security Manager at dnata.
Key benefits to the Brussels cargo community include an increase in cargo operational efficiency, and a reduction in truck waiting times by a reported 90%. Another significant benefit of DGL is the transparency of cargo landside activities for the ground handling agents and freight forwarders. DGL will create upfront visibility for the freight forwarders allowing them to plan their activities in advance and reduce the throughput time of freight at Brussels Airport. It also enables the ground handling agents to improve their resource allocation and customer service.
The achievements by the Brussels community in rolling out the DGL demonstrate the potential of digital transformation and collaboration in the air cargo industry. Through the upcoming Truck Dock Slot Booking (TDSB) initiative to be rolled out in early 2024, the Changi air cargo community could look forward to greater efficiency and cargo landside visibility.
