Changi Airport Breaks Ground on Terminal 5

Spanning 1,080 ha, the Changi East development comprises Terminal 5 and the Changi East Industrial Zone (CEIZ), and other key aviation facilities, that will position Singapore to capture future growth opportunities in the region.

On 14 May 2025, the Prime Minister of Singapore and Minister for Finance, Mr Lawrence Wong, officiated the groundbreaking ceremony for Changi Airport Terminal 5 (T5), marking a major milestone in Changi Airport’s long-term growth plans.

Powered by state-of-the-art airport systems and automation, T5 will allow Changi Airport to significantly increase its handling capacity, optimise operations, and leverage new opportunities as travel demand continues to increase in the decades ahead. In its first phase, which is expected to open in the mid-2030s, T5 is designed to handle 50 million passengers annually. T5 will also be linked to Terminal 2 via inter-terminal train system, facilitating seamless transfer to other terminals at Changi Airport to enable the airport to operate as a single integrated air hub. Overall, this mega terminal is expected to strengthen Changi Airport’s position as a leading air hub.

Joining T5 in the 1,080-ha-wide Changi East development is the Changi East Industrial Zone (CEIZ). CEIZ will be accompanied by a remodelled Changi Airfreight Centre and supported by the Airport Logistics Park of Singapore (ALPS) and ALPS2 – the latter having just been announced in October 2024 by the Singapore government to augment the existing ALPS facility. At the end state, Changi’s annual cargo handling capacity will be bolstered from 3 million tonnes per annum today to upwards of 5.4 million tonnes per annum in the mid-2030s. The expansion will support our cargo partners to grow, strengthen, and expand operations, and tap on emerging opportunities. Together, these developments will help to cement Changi’s role as a leading integrated logistics and air cargo hub.

With Asia Pacific, in particular Southeast Asia, projected to be among the fastest growth drivers of air cargo, Changi is keen to play a part in this growth. Looking ahead and more so than ever, amid prevailing global trade and geopolitical tensions, the Changi air cargo hub will remain focused on strengthening our fundamentals of connectivity, operational efficiency, handling capabilities and community collaboration, to solidify our position as a leading global air cargo hub.
