Cultivating family-friendly culture in Changi Airport Group

One of the reasons that Changi Airport is well-loved by travellers, especially families, is its many family-friendly attractions in the terminals. In the same breath, Changi Airport Group (CAG), the company managing Changi Airport, recognises that cultivating a family-friendly culture in the workplace improves its attractiveness to employees, as increasingly, many are trying to balance between family and work responsibilities.

To ensure a thriving workplace, the well-being and happiness of employees is key and one of the initiatives which have become a norm in CAG is flexible work arrangements, as the organisation continues on a hybrid work mode post-Covid.

Increased family-friendly activities

Besides providing support and benefits, divisions in CAG have also started to organise sessions where parents can bring their kids to work. Not only does this help the children of employees to better understand their parent’s job, such activities also enable employees to get to know one another better.

In June this year, our colleagues from Airports Operations Control held their first ever “Kids Day Out” event, where they arranged for colleagues to bring their kids to work, including a tour to the airside, where they paid a surprise visit to Scoot’s Pokemon aircraft. The children also learnt about airport operations behind-the-scenes, and gained a better understanding of their parent’s role in helping Changi Airport continue to be the most awarded airport in the world.

At the end of the airside tour, parents and children gathered back in the CAG office for a colouring and sharing activity session.

On Children’s Day on 6 October, colleagues from People Team and Corporate Divisions were invited to bring their kids for a breakfast gathering, a treat by Ms Justina Tan, CAG’s Executive Vice President, Corporate, People & Culture. Not only did all the kids enjoy themselves immensely, so did all the child in fellow CAG colleagues. After breakfast, the young ones continued with a ChangiVerse Kids Quest workshop, where they had fun in the Metaverse. Besides exploring Changi Airport’s virtual terminals and Jewel while completing quests, they also raced down the Airport Boulevard while trying to avoid obstacles such as dinosaurs.

A ‘Swap-tacular’ event!

Besides organising get-together sessions, the Corporate & Social Responsibility (CSR) team also organised a “swap-tacular” event from September to October 2023, where colleagues could bring pre-loved clothes and books from their kids to swap with others. Besides reinforcing the sense of family within the organisation, this event also promotes environmental sustainability, by giving pre-loved items a new lease of life. All remaining items at the end of the event will be donated to the Metta Welfare Association and the National Library Board, to support underprivileged families and children.

CAG is seeing the initial success of its cultivation efforts for a more family-friendly workplace. Going forward, the organisation will explore more family-friendly activities to foster this pro-family culture.
