Terminal 4: Caring for Passengers and the Environment

Optimizing the terminal for a great experience

Visitors to the Terminal 4 (T4) Open House held in August 2017 would probably have noticed efforts to make the terminal user-friendly for passengers and visitors. Besides ensuring a great passenger experience, Changi Airport Group (CAG) is also keenly aware of our responsibility to the environment.

CAG has implemented multiple sustainability initiatives for across the four terminals, such as carbon emissions reduction, water conservation and waste management, as well as the BCA Green Mark certification. In particular, our newest terminal, T4, has also been awarded Green Mark Gold Plus.Ā  Letā€™s take a look at some of its environmentally-friendly design elements.

Optimal use of natural lighting

Learning from the experience at Terminal 3, the many skylights in T4 allow natural light to infuse the terminal during the day, reducing the need for artificial lights. The arrival and departure corridors, common areas and washrooms are also designed to be dimmed during low-peak periods.

Energy Management System

Equipped with an Energy Management System, this allows us to monitor the energy consumption of individual systems in T4.Ā  With this, extraordinary consumption trends can be detected and measures can be put in place to optimise or improve the efficiency of energy use in the terminal.

Recycling air handling unitsā€™ condensate water for irrigation

As a significant amount of water condensates from the air handling units (AHU) in air-conditioning systems, the T4 Engineering team explored a way to put this water to good use. By collecting this condensate water in tanks, we are able to use it to irrigate the plants in T4.

These environmentally-friendly designs in T4, as well as the other efforts in all our terminals, demonstrate CAGā€™s commitment to environmental sustainability and our continuous improvement to enhance our terminalsā€™ environmental performance.

The Evolution of Hoardings at Changi

To ensure sufficient airport capacity for passenger growth and to continuously improve passenger experience, CAG constantly upgrades Changiā€™s terminals and plans for new developments ā€“ from Terminal 1ā€™s upgrading and expansion to the construction of Terminal 4, Jewel Changi Airport, and Terminal 5.

To ensure that these pockets of upgrading and construction works do not negatively impact the terminal ambience for passengers, CAGā€™s Experience Creation (EC) team pays close attention to the hoardings surrounding the works ā€“ they showcase aspects of Changi Airport through beautiful mural-type paintings.
